Fresh Sparkling Strawberry Basil Lemonade

A refreshing summer drink combining the natural sweetness of strawberries with the herbal brightness of fresh basil, balanced by tart lemon juice and sparkling water for a fizzy finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 810 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice (from about 4 medium lemons)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or to taste)
  • 3 cups cold sparkling water
  • 1 cup cold water (for simple syrup)
  • Ice cubes (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup by combining 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup cold water in a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves (3-5 minutes). Remove from heat and cool completely.
  2. Hull and slice the strawberries. Rinse and pat dry the basil leaves.
  3. In a pitcher, muddle the strawberries and basil leaves gently about 10-15 times to release juices and oils without pulverizing the leaves.
  4. Add 1 cup fresh lemon juice and the cooled simple syrup to the pitcher. Stir well to combine.
  5. Refrigerate the mixture for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness if needed.
  6. Just before serving, add 3 cups cold sparkling water and stir gently to preserve bubbles.
  7. Serve over ice cubes and garnish with additional basil leaves or strawberry slices if desired.

Notes

Muddle gently to avoid bitterness from basil. Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor. Keep all ingredients cold to preserve fizz. Adjust sweetness to taste. For a smoother drink, strain before adding sparkling water. Substitute basil with fresh mint or thyme for variation. Use frozen berries thawed if fresh are unavailable.
